At $4,000 a month, this stay is a masterclass in subtractive hospitality. The experience is defined by what is missing: a couch in the living room, paper towels, trash bags, and any form of cleaning supplies. While an oven is provided, the absence of bakeware or oven mitts renders it a decorative box. The dryer is broken, and I was informed it is too expensive to repair—a bold claim to make to a guest paying luxury rates. The property’s hygiene is questionable, evidenced by a television remote coated in sticky soda residue. Structurally, the house is temperamental; doors refuse to stay shut unless locked, and the locks require the precision of a safecracker to engage. Externally, the crumbling driveway is a shared battleground with a neighbor, while the road serves as a loud, high-traffic cut-through. To conclude the experience, the hosts forced an undisclosed external contract upon us after payment and refused pre-stay questions due to “automated messages” they set up.
