“Granny Shack on Balboa. First the GOOD: excellent location one block to pedestrian promenade around perimeter of island & just 2 blocks to Main Street. Having a parking space is extremely convenient because parking can be tough. Front porch with Adirondack chairs are wonderful for morning, coffee, glass of wine, and people watching. The BAD: UNBEARABLY hot in bedroom which is upstairs in the attic portion of the house (I know listing doesn’t say AC but be aware even multiple fans it didn’t cut it for our August stay. A split unit AC is needed). Unit Needs a deep clean: Clean to the eye but under the sofa was filthy. Lots of deferred maintenance (moldy shower caulking, chipped paint, old carpets upstairs). Old uncomfortable furniture w/ flowery slip covers made it feel like granny’s home from the 60s. Lots of flies in front patio area (host was aware as they had two large fly trap containers but this didn’t help unfortunately.) CONCLUSION: good for cheep-n-cheery stay; avoid in summer.”

“We had a great time and the trip was a very enjoyable trip. The location is in the heart of balboa island, having the parking spot was an absolute game changer staying on the island, it would have been so hard without. The property is cute, its so nice to have a kitchen, two bedrooms and a living room area. We loved the private gated patio so we could leave our paddleboards blown up and walk straight to the bay with them. He even has a hose that we could rinse the sand off our boards and feet before going inside. The main issue we ran into was that I did not see the property had no AC, and it was a heat wave when we stayed. He has many windows to open but the ones downstairs do not have screens so I felt uneasy leaving them open for any person or bug to come inside. Therefore it was hot at night with just the bedroom windows open. Finally, the showerhead was very short at my neck and I'm 5'6" which could stand to see a small upgrade. Overall a great location but a few hiccups for me.”
