Manager Review

Canaan Realty

Canaan Realty's guest rating of 4.66 is below average and may adversely impact performance. Some of this can come from specific properties they manage — but where reviews point to manager weaknesses (responsiveness, cleanliness, listing accuracy) that would apply to your home too, they can adversely affect your bookings and the quality of guests you attract.

This place is way better than the description. The house is great. Kitchen has everything necessary to cook, which is important because there are not many restaurants very close by. Beds are super comfortable. Views and surroundings area are picturesque. Greater location for a summer family getaway.

Beautiful cabin nestled in the woods with a great yard. Rolled the dice on staying at a place without AC in the summer and it was brutal. 88 degrees inside when we got there and we roasted until the sun went down and things cooled off slightly with the windows open that had screens. Best part of the stay was Mirror Lake!!! You have access to kayaks, paddle boards, canoes, and a floating trampoline. The kids loved it and wanted to go every day we were there. It was the highlight of the trip. The basement had a strong musty smell, but it was cooler and the kids loved playing on the pool table. Hot tub was great too. Didn’t love having to load up the garbage in our car and taking it to the office to dispose of to avoid additional fees. The bed in the master was great. Big place that can accommodate large groups.

We were disappointed in the overall cleanliness of the house. The basement smelled very moldy and some of our party are allergic to mold. There were excessive checkout requests. While they asked us to wash a load of laundry, there was no detergent provided. There was a window on the third floor which did not have a screen, and it popped out easily when opened. Trash was expected to be dropped off at a location away from the property. We were asked to provide our own toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, and soap.

This was our first visit to Davis. We really loved staying here and checking out the waterfalls at Blackwater State Park and Albert Falls and Douglas Falls nearby in Thomas. It was convenient to town and there were enough restaurants and a few shops without being overwhelming. We knew the wifi was going to be out for a few days ahead of time, but when we needed to reach Jenni it was a bit tricky getting in (without internet to recheck directions) but we figured it out. Also, we figured the fireplace out, thankfully. It was great relaxing by the fire after walking all day! A few suggestions would be clear directions for the jacuzzi and there was a bit of an odor in the bathroom (not sure if mustiness or not), but overall we were very impressed. Also to note is that we used the loft to sleep even though it was just me and my wife. It was nice and dark and we slept well every night.

I booked and paid $1,483.86 months in advance for a 4 bedroom house (on the river) based on pictures, modern condition and suitable size wise for the family. Less than 24 hours before check in I was informed the property wasn’t available due to a hot water issue and was given a choice of other properties. We wanted to be within walking distance of the town and on the river like the other house provided but only found a house close to town. It was a significant downgrade. Fewer bathrooms - a half bath downstairs and a full upstairs (with hair in the drain when we arrived - and flooded with every use). It had old and dated furniture and lacked many features and qualities of the first home. The substitute property was not on Air B&B but on her realty site and cost $863 and I was refunded the he difference through Air B&B customer service. Because the changed occurred the night before we were leaving - 5 am the next day - our family had no realistic opportunity to find anything else.

This is the second time we've rented through Airbnb with Canaan. This is also the second time that we've had an issue with the cleaning of the house. Upon arrival at 4 p.m. check in, the house had clearly not been cleaned at all, the beds were slept in. I immediately called Canaan and in the midst of that call the cleaners showed up. We had to delay unpacking, spending time with the family and such, to allow for the cleaners to clean the home while we attempted to stay out of their way. We understand that sometimes some houses take longer to clean than others which delays the schedule, but my issue was that this should have been communicated to us prior to us arriving at the house. Canaan did do a slight refund to account for this, but when you're paying almost $2k for 3 nights, I expect the house to be cleaned when I get there! The house was beautiful, had amazing views, and spacious enough for our needs. Beds and pillows were so-so, mattress toppers were used to help.

We travel to Timberline every year for a family ski weekend, but we will never book with Canaan Realty again. Ahead of our stay, Winter Storm Fern was forecasted to bring 20 inches of snow and ice. Due to serious safety concerns, we requested to move our reservation to another available weekend. Despite open dates, the request was denied. We were told the owners were consulted, which I question. Following guidance from the WV Department of Highways, WV DOT, and local police, we were only able to stay 1 of our 3 nights. On the day of checkout—after we were already home—the Governor of West Virginia declared a state of emergency for all 55 counties. Davis received 17 inches of snow and ice. Staying would have left us stranded and unable to safely drive home. Our request for a partial refund was denied. Canaan Realty showed no flexibility or concern for guest safety during a declared emergency. I hope the property owners are aware of how this situation was handled.

Great location, walkable to Davis downtown and a short drive to Blackwater Falls. A few things that made this stay uncomfortable. When we arrived the heat was set to 60F. We followed the instructions to increase the temperature but after an hour the house was still very cold. It took over an hour for a maintainence person to come and give us space heaters which we used during our stay. The floors are unfinished and peeling paint on the walls. Our baby got many splinters from walking around the first level. From the pictures it is not clear that there are very steep stairs to get to the top floor. Each step is the equivalent height of two normal steps. There are no curtains over the windows meaning at night we had no privacy. Also with a young baby naptimes were very difficult because we could not make the room dark. On our last day there was no running water. It took our host over two hours to respond and by then we had already checked out. We could not wash or use the toilet.

If you’re primarily looking for a place to sleep, this is your spot! Black-out curtains and cozy beds led to some amazing sleep. Close to good restaurants, bars, and awesome skiing. Four stars for a few reasons: - light pet smell - heat was supposed to be controlled via a remote but it didn’t work, so heat could only be controlled remotely, which led to a very cold first day/night - Very small lounging quarters - While it technically sleeps four, would not advise having more than two adults, as the beds are very, very close together Would probably check out other places first but would stay again!
